Supporting the Nuns Education

 in Year -2016

Sangamitta Nuns Education Institution

The Most Venerable Nayaka Thero's Birthday falls on the 9th of July. To commemorate this day, (among many other Buddhist activities, we offer gifts to support our student nuns attending Sri Subodharamaya Pirivena in Sri Lanka.

The education of our nuns cannot occur without the valuable contributions from the following most venerables including Viharadipathi Pandithacharya, Most Ven. Wattegama Dhammawasa Nayaka Thero, The Pirivenadipathi Most Ven. Madadeniye Punnaratana Thero. Retired Director of Education in Kandy, Most Ven. Watagoda Vijitha Thero, Royal Pandith, Ven. Peramandiye Sunanda Thero and other Sanga Teachers .

Ven Nayaka Thero delivered a speech at the Nun’s Presentation of Gifts. In his speech, Ven. Nayaka Thero stated that Buddha's teachings include and posessed of Bhikkhu, Bhikkhuni, Upasaka and Upasika. As long as these Four Fold Sanga exists the Buddha's dispensation will remain. Therefore by supporting the Sanana, we are supporting Buddha’s teachings.

The Venerable Nayaka Thero also mentioned about Mahawamsa’s recording of a presence of seventeen thousand nuns at a religious ceremony at the time of King Dutugamunu in Anuradhapura.

The Venerable further stated that Nuns are highly regarded and form an integral part of the Sanga in most South East Asian countries. Unfortunately, Sri Lanka falls behind in this aspect. Therefore, we should work hard to improve the quality education and encourage our Meheni Sasana.

In support of these efforts to support our efforts to improve our Nun’s education, computers and gifts were donated to Gelioya Sil Matha Pirivena as well as Gangoda Bhikkhuni Pirivena and gifts to our student nuns studying at the Sri Subodharamaya. We were also fortunate to be able to donate money towards the building of a retaining wall at Dalpitiya Meheni Aramaya which was affected by the recent landslides. While we are pleased with our efforts, we hope to increase our efforts in years to come.

We appreciate and offer blessings to all those who contribute and support annually to this nun's education event.
